•Most endotracheal tubes today are constructed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Specialty tubes constructed of:
–Silicone rubber
–Latex rubber
–Stainless steel
•Size of the tube measures the diameter inside the tube in mm.
Tube sizes varies from 2 – 10
•Tubes larger than 6 mm ID usually have an inflatable cuff.
•Tubes with no inflatable cuff usually used on pediatric patients (ages below 8).
•Formula to calculate pediatric tube size:
–ID of uncuffed tube = (Patient age in years / 4) + 4
– tube size will be rounded down to nearest 0.5mm
